Biographical / Historical
As a response to the Civil Rights movement Whitworth College developed programs to increase diversity on campus. The first such program was Project Opportunity but was followed by others. A Black Student Union chapter was formed on campus and became active in campus policies. In 1968, Madrona Church in Seattle visited Whitworth College to connect with the students and see if there was any help the church could give, issuing a report on their visit. Also, in 1969, the Black Student Union worked with Whitworth College to begin the Black Studies Program to offer more courses such as the first one, Afro-American History and Culture. The collection is a compilation of administrative documents and correspondence to and from the Black Student Union officers.
