Scope and Contents

Mary Boppell received her Bachelors and Master degrees at University of Washington. She then worked at Kapowsin High School and then Tahoma High School. From 1941-1955, she was Chairman of Home Economics Department at Whitworth University. She then took leave from Whitworth to work at Beirut College for Women in Lebanon from 1955-1956. From 1961-1965, she worked at Allahabad Agricultural Institute in India as a Consultant in the Home Economics Department. Additionally, from 1970-1982, she was a chairman and then professor at the Home Economics Department at Eastern Washington University.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Boppell Johnston, daughter of the Reverend Charles Jacob Boppell and Zilpha Wilson Boppell, M.D., was born November 8, 1915 in Spokane, Washington. Her childhood education was received in the schools of Waterville and West Seattle, Washington.

She was a graduate of the University of Washington (1937) and received a Master of Arts degree (1947) from that institution. From 1941 until 1961 she taught Home Economics at Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington.

Following two missionary short-term assignments overseas (at Beirut College for Women, Lebanon, and Allahabad Agricultural Institute, India) Mary enrolled in the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin (1966-1970). Her doctoral dissertation was published and was widely recognized by organizations seeking to train their personnel for service overseas.

Johnston's final teaching career was devoted to chairing the Department of Home Economics at Eastern Washington State University (1969-1980). She was widely recognized for her professional and volunteer services to local, state and national organizations.

Abstract

This collection contains Dr. Mary Boppell Johnston’s letters from several of her trips, mainly in Lebanon and India. Additionally, there are documents pertaining to her PhD study at University of Wisconsin and her work at Eastern Washington State University. There are miscellaneous documents of her schooling prior to PhD as well.
