Historical Note (Intro)
The Fifth Presbyterian Church of Spokane was founded on May 4, 1905 and was renamed Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1920. There were 37 charter members in addition to the pastor, Rev. Dr, James H. Shields. The congregation began meeting in a butcher shop on Dean Avenue and moved into their first church structure on Cannon and Gardner where they remained until the 1950s. On April 3, 1960, they dedicated a new church building located at Boon and Lindeke as the congregation had outgrown the original building. Westminster Presbyterian began their Outreach Program in the 1960s to help low income and single parent families as well as elderly members of the West Central community. The building was also home to Christ Clinic and Christ Kitchen later on. Additionally, they were a part of the Our Place community center which was organized by run by an interdenominational group of West Central churches.Westminster Presbyterian Church closed its doors on April 28, 2024 after 119 years of service to the West Central community.
