Historical Note
Friends have been active in the Pacific Northwest since 1875 when a group, led by William Hobson, migrated from Iowa and settled in Yamhill County, Oregon. The history of the Spokane Friends Church, formerly known as First Friends Church, begins with a short business meeting in the Spokane Y. M. C. A. Sunday services were planned as well as a Christmas program. On January 3, 1951 officers were nominated for the church and the Sunday school. The first Sunday school and church meetings were held on January 31, 1951 in the Y. M. C. A., Spokane, Washington under the leadership of the Reverend Clark Smith. In May 1951 meetings were moved to the old Madison School where they continued to be held until a new building was constructed.
In February 1952 lots for the construction of a sanctuary were purchased from the Northwest Christian High School Board. These were located on Dalke Avenue between Maple and Ash Streets. Ground breaking took place on Sunday, November 30, 1952 for the $45,000 church. On Sunday, June 12, 1955, the first Sunday school and meeting were held in the new building. The file contains an interesting oral history section.
