Historical Note
Sumner Academy was founded in 1883 by the Rev. George Whitworth and a group of Presbyterian pastors and leaders. The institution located in Sumner, Washington Territory starting life in Sumner Presbyterian Church, was incorporated in 1884. In 1890, the name was changed to Whitworth College and college level classes were added supplementing the preparatory program which continued. In 1899, the college relocated to Tacoma Washington where it remained through the summer of 1914. Fall of 1914, Whitworth College opened its doors with one building and another under construction. Whitworth College continued to grow on the Spokane campus. The name was changed to Whitworth University in 2007.
