Biographical / Historical
In June of 1988 First Presbyterian Church of Spokane, Washington celebrated 100 years of service to the city. The church's first building was located at Riverside and Monroe, costing $3,200. Its present structure, located at 4th and Cedar, was built in 1909, expanded with a Memorial Youth Building in 1951, and further remodeled in 1960.
As a downtown congregation the church tries hard to address the problems of the City of Spokane as well as the larger mission concerns of the nation and the world. Some of the ministries include:
- The Barton School, a tutorial service of teaching the English language by volunteers in both day and evening classes,
- Adopt-a-Hotel, devoted to giving attention to the needs of impoverished residents in a large downtown hotel,
- Christian Aid Network, a cooperative pooling of resources to assist in human and health services for people in need,
- Mid-city Concerns, providing programs and services to the elderly in Spokane,
- Martin Luther King Memorial Youth Center, providing special support to minority youth on Spokane's Eastside,
- Weekday Christian Pre-school, underwriting much of the cost for quality pre-school training.
